What is the British Library? What’s in the collection? How can I find what I need? What development opportunities are available?

Join us online for an introduction to the British Library for prospective and current PhD researchers of all disciplines looking to engage with our collections. This event may also be useful for Higher Education staff who support postgraduate research.

This webinar provides:

an introduction to the Library, our sites and our extensive collection
guidance on registering as a Reader
practical tips for using our catalogues, including a live catalogue demonstration
an overview of development opportunities for PhD and postdoctoral researchers
an opportunity to ask questions about how to get your research started.

Once you have picked up the basics with our introductory webinar, join us for one of our in-person Doctoral Open Days at our St Pancras site. Each Open Day introduces an area of our collection so you can focus on what will be relevant to you.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

learn about specific collection areas and how to access them
meet our curators and reference specialists
see curators’ highlights from our collections
meet researchers with similar research interests and grow your academic network.

Both courses are now live and details of these can be found below: Getting to Grips with Reflexive Thematic Analysis 30/09/2025 Online: 9:30am – 4:30pm Course leader: Christina Silver This one-day online course offers a comprehensive introduction to Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), balancing theoretical discussion with practical exercises. The aim of this course is to open up thinking about the processes of qualitative analysis and enable participants to enact RTA in flexible, iterative and reflexive ways as appropriate to the needs of their projects. This course is interactive, combining discussion, demonstration and practical exercises. Mediation and Moderation Analysis Using R

03/10/2025 9:00 03/10/2025 16:00 Europe/London Mediation and Moderation Analysis Using R Mediation and Moderation Analysis Using R 03/10/2025 Online: 9:00am – 4:00pm Course leader: Alexandru Cernat This one-day course introduces the concepts and techniques of moderation and mediation analysis using R, with a focus on social science applications. Participants will learn how to test for interaction effects (moderation) using regression models, conduct mediation analysis using structural equation modelling and combine both approaches to explore mediated moderation. Emphasis is placed on interpretation, visualization, and reproducible R workflows using real-world data examples. The course covers: A brief refresher on linear regression in R Moderation analysis using interaction terms in regression Probing and visualizing interaction effects Mediation analysis using path models Estimating indirect effects Mediated moderation Applied examples in social sciences Practical coding sessions using real datasets in R By the end of the course participants will: Understand the conceptual foundations of moderation and mediation Conduct moderation analysis using interaction terms in R Interpret and visualize interaction effects Specify and estimate mediation models using path analysis Test indirect effects and interpret mediation results Use SEM to explore differences in mediation across groups Apply techniques to real-world social science datasets The course includes hands-on computer workshops. Music, Sound and Vision at The British Library

31/10/2025 11:30 31/10/2025 16:00 Europe/London Music, Sound and Vision at The British Library Our Doctoral Open Days are for current and prospective PhD students interested in working with our collections during their studies. Each Open Day showcases a different area of our collection, with the aim of making our materials as accessible as possible. Our Open Days give you the opportunity to: understand how to access our collection get expert advice from our Reference Specialists speak with curators of collections relevant to your studies meet researchers with similar research interests and develop your academic network. The day will consist of: a drop-in session with our Reference Specialists, who can advise you on the practicalities of accessing our collections presentations by our curators, introducing you to their collection areas a Meet the Curators session, during which you can view highlights from our collections and talk to our curators about your research a roundtable discussion with a panel of researchers who make use of our collections, exploring their research experiences and hot topics within their fields, plus the opportunity to put your questions to them – more information about the discussion topic and the panellists will be released nearer the event. In this session, explore collections covering music, audio recordings, moving image recordings, and visual arts. This will be useful for anyone looking to engage with the following collections: Music Manuscripts Printed Music News and Moving Images Oral History Literary and Creative Sound Recordings Wildlife and Environmental Sounds Visual Arts.
